The Healing Power of Living Clay

by Neva Jensen
A German scientist once described the bactericidal properties of clay:

The curative properties of clay are founded in its special physical characteristics, above all in the distribution of its minute particles. Individual clay particles are smaller than many bacteria. If infected mucous membranes are more or less flooded with clay, the bacteria are completely surrounded by clay particles and are thus separated from their source of nourishment and become imbedded in the inorganic material. Growth and the survivability of the bacteria are thus halted almost instantaneously, and from this is explained the strikingly speedy abatement of the symptoms of infection and/or symptoms of poisoning in acute infectious diseases of the alimentary canal.

Jullus Stumpf, Bolus fur medizinische Anwendung; Darmstadt, 1916, p. 19.

How it Works

TetraPond ClayTerraPond -- in both powdered and premium hand selected rock forms -- works its wonders through a natural magnetic process. All toxins and decomposed organic materials in nature are positively charged. The magnetic attraction immediately begins when negatively charged TerraPond is introduced into your pond water and begins the micro-encapsulation process. This electrical ion exchange process is also referred to as "flocculation."

As a result, the electrically bonded particles are larger in size and weight. In Koi ponds, this increased mass then becomes filterable in most bio filter systems.

In natural ponds (non-filtered) or larger lake environments (where the recommended application of TerraPond is in powdered form), these enlarged and heavier particles sink to the pond floor and safely decompose. This process is very similar to leaves dropping in the forest and decomposing/composting over time.

According to Japanese Koi breeders, natural clay-lined ponds provide the very best Koi environment. Clay provides better health, conformation, vitality, coloration, stronger immune systems, improved digestion and longer life. As a Koi hobbyist, when your clay choice is TerraPond, your fish will enjoy the very best environment you can provide.

Rock Form

When TerraPond, in its natural rock form is first introduced into your Koi pond, you can look forward to some interesting and enjoyable results. When the rock enters Terra Pond Claythe water, it begins to bubble and slowly "melt." Some clouding then occurs. The clouding and bubbles will provoke your fishes' interest and curiosity.

The boldest fish may approach the rock and begin to swim through the cloud. It may also nibble at the rock as it melts. Your fish are ingesting nutrients through this activity. Little by little, other fish will want to join in on this new game.

Once the fish have had this experience, they learn to look forward to a TerraPond rock treat. Very much like a pet treat, Koi seem to enjoy the experience of playing and nibbling at the substance. As a result of this Koi play activity, your fish will receive the highest form of nutrients through direct ingestion.

Applying TerraPond

TerraPond is an absolutely pure form of Calcium Montmorillonite clay. It contains color-enhancing nutrients for your fish and plants and also removes impurities that result in clarifying the water until it sparkles.

TerraPond is a very fine, pure, edible clay and it will stay suspended in your water while doing its work. Many first-time users are often concerned when their water doesn't clear in a short period of time. Please do not be alarmed. Even if you accidentally apply a dosage that exceeds our recommended amount, you can never harm or overdose your fish with this 100% natural product.

We suggest that you start with a conservative dose if your pond water is already at or close to an acceptable level of clarity. TerraPond's colloidal suspension properties allow it to continue bonding with impurities, carrying them safely into your filter. It also allows more nutrients to get into your fish's systems. Since the best koi are raised and live in mud ponds, your fish will thank you for their mud bath that improves conformation, coloration, health, and vitality.

Weekly Good Water and Maintenance Dose:

  • 50 Grams (two heaping tablespoons) per each 1000 gallons of water

Weekly Prior to a show/Sick Fish/Poor Water* Dose:

  • 100 Grams (1/4 cup or 1/4lb) per each 1000 gallons of water

For poor water conditions, more frequent doses may be required for several weeks until a water balance develops and maximum clarity is achieved. Once a balance is attained, you should be able to return to the Good Water and Maintenance dose or slightly more.

Other Considerations: Water temperature will vary during the year and your dosage amounts should reflect these changes. Lower doses may be used during the cooler months of the year. Speed of water clarity may be affected by your pond water turnover flow rate, number of fish, other animals (turtles), plants and filtration system.

*Decomposed organic carbon (doc), algae (green water), pollution, toxins and lack of clarity.
